This archive of the Rail View darts team begins in 1998.
Although there was a long history of darts in the 'View, the last team
had moved on a year or too earlier.
The new side was led primarily by "Dizzie" Deb,
Jack's then wife, and included Bob, JK, and Dave H - all of whom are still
with the team. Dave brought along his girlfriend - now wife - Debbie,
and his uncle Alan Barker. Bob brought in his son Darren, and Darren brought
his girlfriend Danielle, and his mates Neil, Jeff, and Pat.
For a first season, we didn't do too badly, finishing
mid-table in division four, and runners-up in the 'straight eight' competition.
Among the opposition were "The Man on the Moon" - who we've played every
year since - and "The Royal Standard" - still our favourite venue for
a pre-season friendly! I particularly remember being made very welcome
by the guv'nor of the 'Moon who had been to an LVA do all day, and proceeded
to buy a couple of complete rounds for both the darts teams!
Another good evening was at the Crown where "Dizzie" Deb
fell to her knees and kissed the ground after hitting the double in the
"straight eight". (Her exuberance was always great fun!)
If memory serves me well, the best teams in the division
that year were The NA Royal British Legion, and The Victory Club B, who
really should have been in the Premier division. Our best player was Jack,
with 28 gameshots and a couple of 180s, while Neil and Darren made up
a formidable pair with 51 gameshots between them.
